The 2nd PIC Challenge Day rewards the best projects by LEGI students
On June, 26th, the second edition of PIC Challenge Day took place at the Oeiras Campus of the Instituto Superior Técnico. This initiative aims to highlight the five best projects developed as part of the 1st Cycle Integrative Project (PIC) for the Undergraduate Programme in Industrial Engineering and Management (LEGI).
Following an initial academic evaluation conducted throughout the semester, the projects with the highest grades were selected for the final phase. This edition showcased significant improvements, with higher-quality projects that demonstrated the students’ dedication. With the goal of exposing students to the realities of the industry, this direct contact with professionals benefits both the students and the companies.
The winning team, consisting of Joana Queirós, Luísa Miranda, Rita Alves da Costa and Rodrigo Silva, designed a project focused on enhancing the efficiency of EMEL's trailer dispatch system. Using optimization models, traffic analysis, and algorithms implemented in Python, these students created a platform capable of reducing the average response time to illegal parking situations from 34 to about 8 minutes.
Evaluated by a jury of representatives from Kearney and Kaizen Institute Western Europe, and the LEGI coordinators (Tânia Pinto Varela and António Sérgio Ribeiro), the event strengthens ties between the business environment and academia in a competition whose primary purpose is to introduce students to the professional world and emulate what they will encounter in the job market.
