Hugo Castro Silva | New Faculty Member at DEG

Hugo Castro Silva is one of the newest members of the Department of Engineering and Management (DEG), joining the department after his research work on the project TechSkills — Technological Change and Skills: Employment, Unemployment and Productivity, developed at IN+ and CEGIST. His research interests focus on the role of technology in the labour market, as well as innovation and entrepreneurship. He will be teaching in the area of Economics, in courses such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics.

He has carried out research on the impact of technological change on job duration and unemployment, using Portuguese datasets and econometric analysis. He is currently involved in a study on how digitalisation and artificial intelligence may influence worker mobility across occupations, firms, or economic sectors that may be more or less affected (positively or negatively) by these emerging technologies. This work has strong social relevance, offering insights that can support policy design for technological transition and workforce reskilling, helping society adapt to—and benefit from—technological progress. He is also part of a team exploring the role of demography in entrepreneurship rates, contributing to policy measures that promote firm creation and employment in response to population ageing.

“It is with great enthusiasm that I begin this new phase. It gives me the opportunity to continue exploring in depth the role that new technologies will play in redefining the labour market and shaping the future of work. These are important lessons to bring to my students, who themselves will play a key role in reinventing work and the Portuguese economy,” said Hugo Castro Silva upon signing his contract with Instituto Superior Técnico.

Welcome to the DEG.
