Brief description of the research work: The thesis is driven by the increasing demand for internet connectivity, mobile voice and data services, and the rapidly growing population, especially in developing countries that are experiencing rapid increases in data usage, mobile network penetration, and telecom infrastructure deployment. Such growth in demand for telecommunications requires base stations comprising distributed infrastructure assets such as towers, generators, cooling systems and cable. In some developing countries, these assets encounter unreliable electricity (grid) supply, which results in poor telecom network availability, low quality of services, and infrastructure degradation. The energy supply challenge further exacerbates the management, particularly the operation and maintenance of the base station infrastructure assets.
