Overview

The PhD program in Engineering and Public Policy prepares students to develop research in public policy e management of technology by addressing real world issues where technology, business and legal aspects are equally important. This program focuses on networked infrastructures and offers specializations in telecom policy and energy policy. It also provides strong preparation in decision analysis applied to real world problems.

History

The PhD Program in Engineering and Public Policy has been established in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, USA, a worldwide leading research institution in public policy related issues. This PhD program aims at training public policy analysts able to tackle complex, ill-defined and unstructured, real world problems of large scale and to develop information and knowledge to effective manage such systems.

Objectives

The Phd Program in Engineering and Public Policy trains experts in designing policies that support the development of the telecom and energy sectors. Relevant international policy issues include the regulatory regimes applying to these sectors, the need for universal service, and the emergent challenges arising from the widespread use of both sensor and social networks.

Designed For

The Phd Program in Engineering and Public Policy is designed to prepare engineers that want to be leaders of multidisciplinary teams and projects. Backgrounds in engineering and science are preferred.

Employment

Graduates in Engineering and Public Policy find exciting job opportunities as leaders of multidisciplinary teams that take upon technology related projects where knowledge of how markets work are a plus. Typically, 1/3 of the graduates go to academia, 1/3 to the industry and consulting companies and 1/3 hold governmental related appointments.

Operational Regime

Students will complete the first year of coursework in Lisbon, then spend the second year at CMU in Pittsburgh, two vibrant cosmopolitan cities, and then work between the two places on research toward a dissertation under joint supervision of collaborating academic advisors from CMU, from IST and from other Portuguese partner institutions.

Tuition

Students enrolled in the program are full time students at both IST and CMU and therefore tuition is due at both Universities. The Portuguese National Science Foundation offers a number of limited fellowships that cover such costs.
