Systems engineering and management is a crucial area of Miguel Pereira's research and teaching expertise. Management has been among his principal teaching subjects for many years. He has taught at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and the Instituto Superior Técnico. Additionally, he undertook a post-doctoral research project at INESC TEC, eduBest, and is currently engaged with DEG, working to develop an understanding of Business Analytics and Systems Simulation Modelling. 

Miguel Pereira has focused on operational research, specifically in productivity and decision analysis models applied to health, water and sanitation, energy, and climate change. Professor Miguel Pereira aims to develop and apply such approaches to relevant challenges to society, particularly from the perspective of sustainable development.

For the Professor, lecturing at IST is "the fulfillment of a dream over a decade, resulting from years of hard work, dedication, and passion." He hopes to "learn and collaborate actively with colleagues and students to leverage all the talent of this institution and promote and reinforce the excellence and leadership that have characterized IST for more than a century."
