Miguel Pereira wins award for best doctoral thesis

Miguel Pereira wins the APDIO IO2024 award, with his doctoral thesis in Engineering and Management.

Miguel Pereira, DEG's Assistant Professor, with a PhD in Engineering and Management by the Instituto Superior Técnico was awarded with the "APDIO IO2024 Award". The 2024 edition of the Congress on Operational Research (IO2024), promoted by the Portuguese Association for Operational Research (APDIO) distinguished Miguel Pereira's thesis as the best doctoral work in this area of research, carried out by APDIO members. The jury was composed by personalities of 5 Portuguese Universities: U. Porto, U. Aveiro, U. Lisboa; U. Minho and U. Coimbra). The University of Lisbon was represented by IST through Professor Mónica Oliveira.

Miguel’s thesis ("Efficiency and public policy of the Portuguese Healthcare sector: A look at the pressing issues"), under the scientific guidance of Professors José Rui Figueira and Rui Cunha Marques, presents mathematical models to address issues of health policy and planning, performance evaluation, and health economics of the NHS. With analysis of the multicriteria decision, it gave rise to the publication of 5 scientific articles in the main journals of the specialty, highlighting the impact of Operational Research on Public Policies
