Scientific Structure of the Program
The scientific structure of the program articulates the coordination of the cycle of studies, the scientific supervisors, the Thesis Monitoring Committee, and the competent scientific bodies of Instituto Superior Técnico. In the case of the IST/CMU dual degree, it is also articulated with the supervision and the scientific bodies of Carnegie Mellon University, within the scope of CMU-Portugal.

Scientific Monitoring Functions
The scientific coordination encompasses:
- the articulation between students, faculty, and supervisors
- the scientific evaluation of applications, when applicable
- the validation of the students' curricular and scientific path
- the monitoring of the definition of the topic and the thesis plan
- the articulation with the Thesis Monitoring Committee
- the articulation with the Postgraduate Area
- the articulation with the Técnico Doctoral School on matters transversal to the doctorate
- the articulation with Carnegie Mellon University, in the case of dual degree students
- the monitoring of the evaluation, accreditation, and curricular update processes of the cycle of studies
The specific supervision of each thesis is defined according to the research topic, the scientific framework, and the rules applicable to Técnico's doctoral programs.
Thesis Monitoring Committee
The Thesis Monitoring Committee monitors the scientific development of the doctorate, in conjunction with the student, the supervisors, and the program coordination.
Its role is to support the regular monitoring of the research plan, evaluate the progress of the work, and identify any potential needs for scientific, methodological, or institutional adjustment.
The composition and operation of the Thesis Monitoring Committee must be confirmed in the regulations applicable to Técnico's doctoral programs and the specific rules of the program.
