Doctoral Program in Engineering and Public Policy (DEAEPP)
Brief Introduction
The DEAEPP is a Doctoral program that aims to train experts in public policy and technology management through research in subjects where technological, economic, and legal issues are equally important. The Program originally started with specializations applied to the telecommunications and energy sectors, and has since been expanded to address constant technological changes. The program offers strong analytical preparation to support informed decision-making on complex real-world problems.
History
The DEAEPP is a Doctoral program that was developed in partnership with the Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, United States of America, a world leader in public policy issues. Its creation results from the need to fill a national gap in the preparation of analysts and experts in complex, unstructured, and large-scale problems, who produce essential information and knowledge for the management and design of public policies.
Objectives
The objective of the DEAEPP is to train experts in the design of public technology policies that address major development problems in issues where technology is a fundamental factor, and in sectors where there is segmented regulation, the need for universal service, sensor networks and social networks, and climate change.
Target Audience
PhD graduates of the DEAEPP Program will work in leadership positions and manage multidisciplinary teams dedicated to projects where engineering and technology components play a fundamental role, but for which knowledge from various fields is necessary, as provided by the program.
Career Prospects
The DEAEPP trains experts with major and varied employment opportunities at the international level. Historically, approximately one-third of PhDs in this area find employment in industry in interdisciplinary team management positions. One-third of PhDs find employment in government institutions and think tanks, and another third pursue an academic career in top international universities.
Operating Regime
The program operates in two formats: 1) In partnership with Carnegie Mellon University, where candidates spend half of their time to graduate; or 2) A program entirely provided by IST.
Tuition Fees
When students are enrolled full-time at IST and CMU, tuition fees are payable at both institutions. When students complete their program entirely at IST, tuition fees are only payable at this institution. Annually, the IST Management Board establishes the tuition fees for the various educational programs at IST. This information is available in the IST Doctoral Tuition Fees Regulation.
